2010 Betty Bergreen Junior Championship

History

One of Mrs. Betty Bergreen’s last wishes was to promote junior golf at the Bartlett Country Club. She wanted to bring “new blood” to the course so the juniors can appreciate the beauty of the grounds and clubhouse as she did for over 50 years. Mrs. Bergreen was an avid golfer who won many local and regional tournaments during her golf career, including the SWNY-NWPA Woman's Amateur Championship and the Bartlett Country Club Women's Club Championship (6 times). She felt that the Bartlett Country Club was one of the finest courses that she has played, and she played many courses all over the country. She wanted to have a junior tournament at the Bartlett Country Club with one of the benefits being that the juniors potentially could be asked to become junior members, thereby bringing in “new blood” to play our great course. Mrs. Bergreen felt strongly that the youth are the future of the club and will be our future members. The establishment of this tournament will help fulfill her wishes for years to come.

Format

The tournament will be a match play championship for the top 16 Penn-York junior golfers (male and female). The championship will be held on August 11th through August 14th. The 1st round matches will be played on August 11th, the quarter-finals on August 12th, the semi-finals on August 13th, with the final match on August 14th. Tee times will begin each day at 8:00 am.

Eligibility

All Penn York Junior Golf League golfers (male and female) are eligible to play who are in the 14 and older age groups. This would include graduating seniors who are 18 years old or younger as of June 21, 2010. An entry form is available from the Penn York Junior Golf League web site. Please indicate on the entry form if you are planning on playing in the Bergreen Championship if you qualify.

The 16 qualifiers will be determined by using the lowest 16 scoring averages from the five Penn-York tournaments. Qualifiers must play in at least 2 Penn-York tournaments and the scoring average will be determined by using the player's 2 lowest scores. Phone calls will be made to those that qualify after the final Penn-York tournament to invite them to play and confirm their ability to play. Players must confirm their playing in the Championship by August 5th. If players do not confirm by that date, the players with the next lowest scores will be invited to play. Players will be seeded according to their averages. Ties will be broken by the lowest scores in the latest Penn-York tournament.

Prizes

Mrs. Bergreen was a firm believer in friendships after a competitive round. She liked to have a good lunch with her competitor after a hard fought match. Win or lose -- friendships were the most important things she believed in. Her friendships lasted many decades. Therefore, after each match, the competitors will have a lunch on Mrs. Bergreen in the Bartlett Country Club Grille.

Trophies will be awarded to the match play champion and runner up. Prizes will also be awarded to players that win a match or matches in the tournament.

Entry fee

There will be no entry fee for this tournament.

Caddies

Mrs. Bergreen was a firm believer in using caddies when she played her many competitive rounds. Caddies are therefore encouraged. All contestants must walk and carts will not be allowed.

Spectators

Parents and friends are welcome to support their junior golfers in this tournament.
